Intro to Creating a Hygge Spiritual Practice

"...[the answer might be] starting a regular spiritual practice routine that can both enrich your spiritual awareness and strengthen your faith. This practice becomes your religion and in turn, an integral part of your life."
~ Tom Rapsas, Patheos.com

Sometimes, people come to the process of creating a spiritual practice with religion or spirituality in place, already.

But for those who are spiritual but not religious, like me, and are not sure about beliefs or are wanting to avoid dogma, creating a spiritual practice can become a meaningful faith practice all by itself.

"At its heart, hygge is about finding the pockets of light when covered in a blanket of darkness. How often are we challenged to do this within our own souls? How often do we face life and spiritual trials with a sense of dread, instead of looking for the silver lining? I find being intentional about hygge is not only comforting in the temporal sense, but it makes for wonderful spiritual training." ~ Blessed is She

Three Video Questions (25 Seconds)

Will a hygge spiritual practice still be spiritual? Yes.

You won't be taking anything away, you'll be adding warmth, coziness, comfort and anything else that makes for a spiritual practice you can look forward to each day. Adding the feel-good doesn't have to mean that anything gets lost.

"To light a candle by myself is one of my favorite prayers." ~ David Steindl-Rast

At its best, hygge spirituality is or can be a gentle, comforting way to shine light into the dark places.

It can be a doorway for coming back to spirituality. A way to start again before you know what your spiritual practice will become.

A warm and cozy container for all your spiritual explorations, for every moment of connection with the otherworld.

More on that as we continue.

love, Jeanine

Maybe these rules I have offered to folks who never joined a Jewish service will help those who want to start a spiritual practise.
Let's start with the fact that you aren't the first person who never developed a spirtual practice yet. Which means it's OK to ask for help from others. (Isn't that what Jeanine is offering right here?)
Nor, should you expect to feel perfectly at ease- or even feel the results right away. If you can listen to others (or sit in a communal setting), just feel the strength, devotion, and love from the others. If you are by yourself, don't try to analyze the words or the prayers, feel the cadence. Let it envelope you.
Repeat.

I so very much liked this particular line,"It can be a doorway for coming back to spirituality. A way to start again before you know what your spiritual practice will become."

A gentle nudge to finding your spiritual path.. Thanks for this post!

I like the image of the doorway. I think that I need to go through that doorway, open to the possibilities of spiritual growth, without any expectations of what I might find on the other side.

That's it, Alice! You said it perfectly. It is what I have come to after a lot of time went by while I tried to decide or make myself think I knew what was there. The minute I removed that pressure & expectation, that doorway opened for me! And I have had some spiritual practice moments that I know are the beginning.

I love the idea of adding warmth/comfort to spiritual practice in whatever form it may take. I love candles. I love tea. I really like the idea of incorporating one or both of those into spiritual practice. Over the past few years -- well, before my self-defined crisis of faith, I suppose -- I had started doing just that. I would either light a candle before journaling or make some tea. Sometimes I would do both.

What a beautiful post from Roy! I am both religious and spiritual, for me they both seem to go hand and hand.
